About the Course 

How to be Clear and Compelling with Data – Principles II is designed to give you hands-on practice producing charts and tables in effective form (Using Excel; and situating them in reports, visual displays and dashboards.)

Given what you have learned in Course One*, or if not, then elsewhere, on the fundamentals of how people perceive data and how to maximize your effectiveness through your choice of reporting formats, you now will learn, in detail, techniques for producing highly effective charts, tables and reports, using common software (Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint)

Basic familiarity with Excel, especially, is needed in order to maximize the value of this course.

Course duration: 1 half day

For who: Any professional who has to present data on a regular basis and wants to develop compelling and adapted visuals to better represent their data.

Course Format

This course is delivered using Internet-Based Video Conferencing, specifically Zoom Meetings and also uses web-based collaboration tools that can greatly enhance productivity in an online medium.

The workshop takes four hours, with ample time for breaks and discussion. Some preparation will be suggested, so that participants can bring their own examples, to consider and discuss – this is highly suggested in order to get the most out of your course.

Specific Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course participants will:

  • Build skills in producing professional quality data visuals using at-hand software
  • Conceptualize, design and narrate visual data displays, dashboards and infographic-style approaches for professional applications
  • Build skills in creating digital data visual displays, dashboards and reports

Instructor

John Burrett helps organizations use and make sense of their data and their complex world. He focuses on developing effective tools: visual analytics, social/dynamic network analysis and effective presentation; and on building capacity to use data effectively for evaluation, research and performance measurement in government, public good and business organizations.
